William Paul Bonner

July 7, 1931 — April 20, 2024

COOKEVILLE-William Paul Bonner, a gracious, humble, and wise gentleman, went to be with the Lord peacefully on April 20, 2024, at the age of 92 at home in Cookeville, TN. Born on July 7, 1931, in Bowdon, GA, he was a beloved figure in both his professional and personal lives.

Paul, as he was known, was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 59 years, Marjorie Rice Bonner; son, Bruce W. Bonner; parents, William A. and A. Pearl Treadaway Bonner; brother, Fred Bonner; and sister, Mildred Fleming. He is survived by his loving family, including brother, James C. Bonner; daughter-in-law, Michelle V. Bonner (Bruce); son, Brent H. Bonner (Barbara); daughter, Brenda B. Ress (David); and granddaughters, Miquellie and Alliese Bonner and Corinna and Katherine Ress.

Graduating from Bowden High School, Bowden, GA, in 1948, Paul earned his Bachelor's degree in Chemistry (1951) from the University of Georgia. He met his future wife, Marjorie Rice, while stationed at Fort McClellon Army Base in Aniston, AL, and they married in 1956. After working for several years, Paul was accepted to the University of Florida where he earned a Masters (1965) and PhD (1967) in Civil Engineering. He eventually moved his family to Cookeville, TN, where he taught graduate chemistry and other courses in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, at Tennessee Technological University and became professor and department chairperson. He enjoyed mentoring and teaching his students.

In addition to his academic contributions, Paul operated a small cattle farm with the same diligence and care he devoted to all his endeavors and was evidence of the simple pleasures he valued in life.

Paul had many interests but cherished most the time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, who he lovingly called his "grand girls." His presence was a comforting and guiding force in their lives.

A remarkable person, Paul never forgot his humble beginnings which impacted his purpose and legacy. He was a respected educator, a loving family man, a man of faith, and trusted friend; he will be deeply missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
