William D. Holland

A Memorial service for Dr. William Dinsmore Holland (Denny), age 85 of Cookeville, will be held Thursday, January 10th at 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's Episcopal Church. Father Michael Spear-Jones will officiate. A reception will follow the service at the church. Dr. Holland passed away Friday, December 21, 2018 at his residence. He was born November 9, 1933 to the late Archibald Dinsmore and Sara Boswell Holland in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Henry Grady High School in Atlanta in 1951. Following high school, he attended Georgia Tech University and earned his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering in 1955. Next, he joined the US Navy and served on the USS Tills Destroyer Escort for two years. He then attended MIT and earned his master's degree in Chemical Engineering in 1958. Following graduation, he worked for Lockheed in Atlanta in the Engineering Test Laboratory. In 1966, he received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from Georgia Tech University. Dr. Holland moved to Cookeville in 1965 and was a Chemical Engineering professor at Tennessee Tech University for 34 years. He also worked at Oak Ridge as a part-time consultant in the Robotics and Process Systems Department. He loved golfing and fishing; he had the opportunity to fish in Canada on several occasions. In his later years, he traveled throughout the US and Europe. He retired in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Caroline Cooke Holland; daughters, Caroline (Tim) Aland of Stevensville, MD, Sally Holland of Arlington, VA, and Anne (Roger) Stewart of Charleston, SC; grandchildren, Timmy Aland, David Aland, Mary Aland and Sam Grey; and a sister, Francis Donald of Nassau, Bahamas.
