Whitley Odell Sliger

Graveside services for Mr. Whitley Odell Sliger will be held on Saturday, September 5, 2009 at the Stewart Cemetery in Putnam County. Mr. Sliger died on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born May 31, 1925 to the late Thomas Clyde and Rose Stamps Sliger. Odell is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jewel Choate Sliger; three children, Dr. Bruce Sliger and wife Arlene of Atlanta GA, Rose Ann Sliger and Dr. Van O. Sliger and wife Marta both of Cookeville. His grandchildren include Justin Kindrick, Chase Sliger and wife Gigi, Chad Sliger, Haley Sliger, Matthew Sliger and John Sliger. Brothers and sisters include: Cecil Sliger and Louise Bockman-both of California, Lester Sliger, Julia Alexander, and Jerry Sliger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Vestal Sliger of California, and two sisters, Hazel Brewington and Mary Ila Murphy. Odell was a World War II Veteran who served in the 4th Marine division in the South Pacific. He fought in the Battles of Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian, Mariana Islands, Iwo Jima, and Volcano Islands. Mr. Sliger served as a deacon for over 40 years, with many of those years at Cane Creek Baptist Church where he also taught Sunday School for many years. He was retired from Wal-Mart as a Sporting Goods manager. No public visitation has been scheduled. Dr. Randall Adkisson will officiate the services.
