Walter Lytal

November 28, 1926 — December 16, 2023

Walter Leroy Lytal of Cookeville passed away peacefully on December 16, 2023. Born on November 28, 1926, in Prentiss County, Mississippi, Walter's life was a testament to the enduring spirit of his generation, marked by love, service, and a dedication to his family.

Walter's journey through life was one of commitment and bravery. As a young man, he served his country with honor during World War II as a member of the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre. His experiences would shape his perspective on life's preciousness and the importance of resilience.

After returning home from the war, Walter found both love and partnership with Mary Hazel Eaton Lytal. They married on October 8, 1947, in Booneville, Mississippi, and their union was blessed with a shared journey of 76 years.

Walter's professional life was characterized by his role as the building manager at the Dermon Office Building in Memphis, Tennessee, from which he retired after many years of dedicated service. His work ethic and leadership were a reflection of his character, always striving to provide for his family and contribute to his community.

A man of faith, Walter was a member of Bangham Heights Baptist Church. His simple tastes and family-oriented values were evident in everything he did. He found joy in the small moments, whether it was tinkering on his property or spending time with his loved ones.

Walter's legacy is carried on by his beloved wife, Mary, his son Scott Lee Lytal and wife Sherri, his brother Billy Lytal, and his daughter-in-law Lynn Lytal. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren, Justin Lee Lytal and wife Rachel, Loren Lytal Korch and husband Jonathan, and his great-grandchildren, Palmer Lee Lytal, Sutton Avery Lytal, Nora Henning Korch and Emery Hazel Korch.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Lee Lytal Sr. and Lizzie Ruth Stennett Lytal; his son, Mark Alan Lytal; his brother, Edward Lytal Jr.; and his sisters, Inez Norwood and Sarah Martic.
