Funeral services for The Honorable Walter Carroll Drake, age 89, of Cookeville, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday August 6 at Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ. Bro. David Powell will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Smyrna Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner and again Monday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Judge Drake passed away peacefully Wednesday evening, August 1, 2018 at his home, surrounded by his family. He was born April 14, 1929 in Cookeville, TN to the late Jesse Allen and Mary Draper Anderson Drake. Judge Drake was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ, serving in the capacity of both deacon and elder in Jackson, TN and Cookeville, TN. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and served during the Korean War. He was a member of the VFW and also of the esteemed ROMEO Club (Retired Old Men Eating Out) in Cookeville. He obtained his Bachelors Degree from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute (now TTU) in 1956, where he played football. He was an avid Tech football fan the remainder of his life and went to many games sporting his ‘TPI' purple ball cap. He received his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1957. He practiced law for several years in Jackson, TN before being named a U.S. Bankruptcy Trustee and being elected as City Judge in Jackson for the next 17 years. In 1996, he moved back home to Cookeville and practiced law alongside his daughter until his retirement in 2003. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce Kuykendall Drake, who he married on June 15, 1956 in Cookeville; two daughters, Amy (Mike) Allen of Cookeville, Mary Dee (Brian) Allen of Cookeville; grandchildren, Celia Elizabeth (Jon) Hanson of Salt Lake City, UT, Jesse Lee Allen of Cookeville, and Benjamin Edgar Allen of Cookeville; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Grace Hanson and Ethan Gregory Hanson of Salt Lake City, UT; and a brother, James Anderson (Maxine) Drake of Cookeville. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Eleanor Jane Drake Mitchell. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. The Hardee's Coffee Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.
