Funeral services for Walter Wayne Wheelhouse, Jr. M.D., age 68, of Cookeville, will be held Saturday March 17th at 1:00 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment, with military honors, will follow at Cookeville City Cemetery. Pastor Scott Parkison will officiate. Dr. Wheelhouse's family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. He died Thursday, March 8, 2017 at his residence. He was born July 27, 1949 in Appleton, Wisconsin to the late Walter Wayne Wheelhouse, Sr. and Alice Louise Stephens Wheelhouse. Raised in St. Louis, Missouri, Walt then attended Darlington School in Rome, GA and later served his country as a member of the US Air Force. Dr. Wheelhouse was a 1974 graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation residency in 1979. He practiced in Lawrenceburg, TN, Springfield, Il, Franklin, TN and in Cookeville where he has resided since 1999. His belief in orthopedic practice originated from the golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. He was friendly and very kind to everyone. Faith in Jesus Christ was also important to Dr. Wheelhouse. He attended church regularly, most recently at Stevens Street Baptist Church. In previous years, he has served on the Board of Directors of the Exchange Club which is active in prevention of child abuse. Also, he has been active in the Boy Scouts, Rotary International, and a past President and Deputy District Governor of the Lion's Club. He enjoyed golfing, skiing and swimming and was an avid fan and ticket holder of the Nashville Predators. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Kimberly Grady Wheelhouse; daughters, Jenna (Bill) Sherman, M.D. of Boston, MA, Lara (Colin) Mead of Nashville, Katie Wheelhouse of Tuscaloosa, AL, and Anastasia Baker of South Carolina; stepchildren, Jeremy Crouch of Texas, Stephanie Hale of McMinville and Barry Crouch of Ooltewah, TN; thirteen grandchildren; and by three nephews.
