Funeral services For Mr. Virgil Murphy, 94 of Gainesboro, will be 1 p.m. Thursday, December 31 at Stevens Street Baptist Church with Dr. Jimmy Arms and Dr. Tim Frank officiating. Interment with military honors will follow in Double Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11 a.m. until service time at the church. Mr. Murphy died Saturday evening, December 26, 2015 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born April 8, 1921 in Putnam County, TN to the late Lyman Arthur Sr. and Mary Etta Barr Murphy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Sliger Murphy; sister, Cora Mae (Emma) Allison; three brothers, Lyman Arthur Murphy Jr., Jessie Delbert Murphy, and Willie Ewin Murphy; and infant daughter, Rose Mary Murphy. Mr. Murphy was a WWII veteran where he served as a sniper in the US Army. After his military service he moved to Oak Ridge and worked at K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He was a charter member of Robertsville Baptist Church and former member of Oak Ridge Masonic Lodge 756 F&AM. He later moved to Cookeville where he was a member of Stevens Street Baptist Church and Cookeville Masonic Lodge 266 F&AM. Mr. Murphy had a servant's heart. Throughout his life he sought out and filled needs of the disadvantaged. Many friends and acquaintances remember him for the cakes he made and gave away. He is survived by his wife Susie Miller Murphy (whom he married May 25, 2002 at Burgess Falls); son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Janice Murphy of Florence, MS; special niece and her husband, Mary Audrey and James Byrd of Louisville, TN; three stepsons, Tim Riley of Wolf Creek, OR, Don Riley of Cookeville, and Paul Riley of Jacksonville, OR; step-daughter, Becky Riley of Knoxville; brother, Clyde Eugene (Gene) Murphy of Murfreesboro, TN; sister and brother-in-law, Lela and Clarence Winfree of Warren, MI; grandchildren, Greg Murphy (wife Billie), Giovanni Murphy (wife Christina), Erica Murphy, Daniel Byrd, Forest Riley, Oriah Riley, Samone Riley, and Hezekiah Riley; great-grandchildren, Alex Murphy (wife Cathleen), Chris Murphy, Bailey Murphy, and Kylie Murphy. Pallbearers will be Daniel, Alex, Chris, Greg, Glen, and Harold Murphy, Danny and Mike Sliger. Honorary Pallbearer will be Jerry Allison. Memorial contributions can be made to The Care Center of Stevens Street Baptist Church, 377 Short Street, Suite B, Cookeville, TN 38501.
