Verna Mclaughlin

A private service for Verna A. McLaughlin, 58, of Algood will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Schaghticoke, NY. at a later date. On May 14, 2011, with her children by her side, Verna passed away with peace and dignity in her current home state of Tennessee. She was the daughter of the late John and Arlene McLaughlin of Valley Falls, NY. Verna moved to Ashland City, TN in 1994 and settled in Algood, TN in 2005. She was employed as a Senior Consultant with Take Care Health Systems, a subsidiary of Walgreens, prior to her death. A graduate of Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing in 1974, she pursued her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing at Russell Sage College in Troy, NY and earned a Masters of Science degree from Vanderbilt University in 1997. She was commissioned in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps Reserve in 1986 and resigned her commission at the rank of Captain in 2002. She was certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in 1997, practicing in Nashville and Cookeville, TN, before assuming her last position. Verna is survived by her daughter, Stacey Bishop, Josh VanDeWal, and grandchildren, Donovin, Kyra, Aiden, Cody and Cylie; her son John Bishop, Jennifer Schoenfisch and grandchildren, Noah and Ari; and brother and sister-in-law, John and Debra McLaughlin from Schaghticoke, NY. In lieu of flowers, Verna has requested that contributions be sent to Samaritan Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, Troy, NY 12180, or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org).
