Tony Long

d. August 3, 2013

On the afternoon of August 3rd, 2013 James Anthony (Tony) Long passed away as a result of injuries caused by an accident while driving his semi – truck in Texas. Tony was 59 years old. He was the oldest of four children and the only son of James (Jim) R. M. and Betty Long. He has 2 sons that he was immensely proud of. His sons are Shawn Long who served in the war in Afghanistan during "Operation Enduring Freedom" and James (Jimi) R. M. Long II who served in the war in Iraq during "Operation Iraqi Freedom". Tony was very proud of them and loved to brag about his sons at any opportunity. Tony was born on June 2nd, 1954 in San Diego CA, was raised in Cookeville, TN, and attended Putnam County High School. Tony was an active member at Silver Point Church of Christ for several years. He was employed as a younger man for over a decade at Fleetguard in Cookeville; a job which he always says he enjoyed more than any other job he's had. He resigned from Fleetguard in order to help his father manage an environmental equipment business (Enviroquip). Tony assumed full responsibility of leadership at Enviroquip after his father's passing. Tony later decided to get his CDL (Commercial Drivers License) and become a truck driver. He often said how much he enjoyed being on the road and seeing so many different sites from the high vantage point of his truck. Tony was preceded in death by his father Jim Long. He is survived by his mother Betty Long of Algood, son's Shawn Long, Jimi Long, both of Clarksville, and the love of his life and his grandson Alex (Bear) Long. Also survived by Tony, are his 3 sisters: Karen Cooper of Mt. Juliet, TN, Kim Trust of Warner Robins, GA, and Beth Long of Atlanta, GA. His nieces are: Stephanie Stamps Findley, Andrea Stamps Massingill, and Laurel Trust. Nephews include: James Cooper, Daniel Trust and Logan Trust. Tony enjoyed life, his interest and experiences were immense, ranging from spelunking, painting, photography; he truly loved the outdoors and getting together with his family and friends. You'd be hard pressed to find a subject that he wasn't familiar with. Tony will be forever missed by his family and friends. We will always remember his mischievous laugh and wonderful smile. The family will be holding a memorial service to honor him on Saturday August 17th from 4pm to 5pm at the Algood United Methodist Church with Rev. Pat Smith officiating. Visitation will be from 3 pm until service time at the church.
