Memorial services for Tommie Harness Thackston, 81 of Cookeville will be Saturday, September 26 at 7 PM at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Kevin Conrad of the First United Methodist of Cookeville will officiate. The family will receive friends from 5 PM until service time. Due to COVID-19, social distancing will be observed. Mrs. Thackston, passed very peacefully, Saturday, September 19, 2020 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born February 26, 1939 in Dyersburg, TN to the late Tom and Vera Tickle Harness. She was a graduate of Dyersburg High School. Tommie got her BS from UT in Knoxville and Master's Degree from ETSU. She taught in Johnson City, Knoxville, St. Louis, MO, Montgomery, Ala., Baxter, TN and Cookeville Nashville Tech before retiring. She was loved by her students. She taught math and chemistry for 36 years. Many of those years were at Upperman High School in Baxter. She was a member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church. Tommie was the wife of Charlie Thackston for 60 years (Married June 10, 1960), moving many times with Charlie as he moved up the ladder with the Ralston Purina Co. In 1977 Tommie moved to Cookeville area where she taught at Baxter. Charlie decided to go into business for himself 8 years later and Tommie supported his ventures. Tommie loved her family, in addition to husband, Charlie, her oldest son, Jeffrey Snoden Thackston, his wife Donna, and their 3 sons: Tim (Crystal) of Hudson, N.C., Ben (Jennifer) from Mooresville, N.C. and Sam who is a freshman at UT Chattanooga, TN. Jeffrey Snoden lives in Crossville, TN. Charles "Chuck" Thomas Thackston, her youngest son, his wife Sue, and their son Alex live in Louisville, KY. Tommie was nine (9) years older than her only sister, Diane who is married to Dr. Paul Huffstutter. Tommie will be buried in Lebanon, TN in the Memorial Park in the Thackston grave site complex.
