Tom Pointer

September 8, 1926 — August 28, 2022

Thomas Hampton Pointer passed away Sunday evening August 28, 2022 at Charter Senior Living in Cookeville with his friends and family by his side. He was born in Algood, TN on Sept 8, 1926 to the late Benton Mack Pointer & Orga Hampton Pointer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Pate Pointer, Lucille Pointer Goolsby and Sam Pointer. Tom and his siblings were raised on the family farm near Algood. He graduated Algood High School in 1946. He went on to join the US Navy at the end of World War II where he served on the USS Talladega and was honorably discharged. On his return to Tennessee, with the GI bill in hand, he graduated with a degree in Agriculture from Tennessee Technological University. After college he began his career working for the United States Department of Soil Conservation. During this time he married Connie B. Huddleston. They had two children, Susan Annette Pointer Jensen-Patterson and Thomas Keith Pointer. He loved his children deeply and spoke of them often. Keith and Annette gave him five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The grandkids always held a special place in his heart. The Department of Soil Conservation kept him moving throughout Tennessee and the United States. He eventually landed in Washington DC as the CFO of the United States Department of Soil Conservation. After 31 years, 6 months and 3 days he retired to Algood. He built a house on the family’s city farm and set about enjoying retired life. He was an active member of Algood United Methodist Church, Algood Lions club, TTU Ag Foundation, Middle Tennessee Antique Engine and Tractor Club, National Association of Retired Federal Employees and a TNRCD State Envirothon Volunteer. He cherished his time with his friends and family. He thought it was neat that he was able to be retired longer than he worked. Tom moved to Cookeville in his later years to an assisted living center. He still enjoyed gallivanting all over town with the help from friends. Tom Pointer leaves a legacy of helping, caring and working to make his part of the world a little better. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday September 1 at the Algood United Methodist Church. Bro. Albert Willis will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Algood City Cemetery. His family will receive friends Wednesday from 5 - 8 p.m. at the church and again Thursday from 10 a.m. until service. Pallbearers will be Charles Pointer, Mark Goolsby, Sam Hale, Lynn Goolsby, Timothy Pippin, and Pat Pointer. Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
