SYD BYRD COOKEVILLE--Funeral services for Mrs. Sydney Ann Byrd, age 72 will be held Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at 11:00 am in the Algood United Methodist Church. Rev. Albert Willis and Rev. Pat Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Memorial Cemetery. Her family will receive friends Monday from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Mrs. Byrd died Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. She was born January 7, 1948 in Baltimore, MD to the late William Sidney and Louise Denson. She earned a bachelor's degree in social work from Towson State University in Maryland. Syd returned to school, serving as class president and graduating with honors from Tennessee Tech while earning a bachelor's degree of nursing and beginning a career as a registered nurse. She was employed at Cookeville Regional Medical Center for 30 years in various roles, including as Nursing Director of the Medical Oncology Unit until her retirement. She was a member of the Tennessee Nursing Association, Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Society and the Philanthropic Education Organization (P.E.O.). She was an active member of Algood United Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a niece, Marsha Brown and nephew, Mike Brown. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Roy J. Byrd; daughter, Lisa Ann Byrd of Hendersonville; sons, William 'Kevin' Byrd and wife Jackie of North Augusta, SC and Royce 'Jeffrey' Byrd and wife Tennille of Columbus, OH; grandsons, William 'Aidan' Byrd and Savva Alexander Byrd; sister, Donna 'Sunny' Robinson of Ormond Beach, FL; and by several nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to Algood United Methodist Church, 135 West Main St., Algood, TN 38506 and/or Tennessee Tech University, Whitson-Hester School of Nursing, Campus Box 5001, Cookeville, TN 38505.
