Continuing her journey of learning, she attended Tennessee Tech University, reflecting her intellectual curiosity and her love for knowledge. With an analytical mind and a talent for critical thinking, Shirley was an engaging conversationalist, often delighting in discussions that spanned topics from athletics to art, politics to travel.

Shirley was the proud and devoted wife of James W. "Jimmy" Mackie, to whom she was married for an inspiring 70 years. Together, they raised a loving family that blossomed under her nurturing care. She is survived by her two sons, John Murrey Mackie and his wife, Monica, and James Robert "Bob" Mackie and his wife, Cindy. Her legacy continues to thrive through her cherished siblings, Jere Hargrove and Linda Gropp, as well as her beloved grandchildren: Lauren (Gage) Bumbalough, Mallory Mackie, James Robert "Mac" Mackie, Jr., and Jordan (Hayden) Wieck. Shirley found joy not only in her family but also her unwavering faith. A longtime member of the Willow Avenue Church of Christ in Cookeville, she found strength and solace in her spirituality, which guided her interactions and enriched her life. Known for her loving and friendly demeanor, she formed bonds with those around her creating an atmosphere imbued with warmth and affection.

An avid and loyal fan of the Alabama Crimson Tide football team and the Kentucky Wildcat Basketball program, Shirley's passion for sports mirrored her vivacity for life itself. Her enthusiasm for athletics resonated with friends and family alike, often sparking lively conversations that brought joy to gatherings.

In this time of sorrow, the family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to her devoted caretakers-Pat Sullivan, Cheri Meadows, and Sharron Colwell - whose unwavering support and care were instrumental in Shirley's life during her later years.
