Shirley Jean Adkins

BAXTER-Memorial services for Shirley Jean Chaffin Adkins, 84, will be Friday, July 7 at 3 PM at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper Huddleston Horner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Friday, July 7 from 12 noon until service time at the funeral home. Bro. Garland Robinson will officiate.

Shirley Jean died Friday, June 16, 2023 in Plant City, Florida after an extended illness.

She was born November 13, 1938 in Putnam County, Tennessee to the late Leo and Veila Herren Chaffin.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Adkins.

She wed Donald Adkins of Ypsilanti, Michigan on May 31, 1969 in Dickenson County, Virginia.

Jean attended Baxter Seminary. She was of the Church of Christ faith and attended Herren's Chapel Church of Christ in her youth. Jean was involved in customer service, working at Hobby Lobby, Walmart and in the cafeteria at the GM Plant in Detroit. She was a people person and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, especially the grandkids. Later in life, she enjoyed fishing and crafts.

Survivors include sons, Randall (Jackie) Mathis of Cookeville, TN, and Greg (Nicolette) Mathis of Valrico, FL; three grandsons, David Mathis of Thornton, CO, Shawn Mathis of Lakeland, FL and Jesse Mathis of Valrico, FL; sister, Josephine Whitefield of Baxter; niece, Patricia (Whitefield) Humphrey of Baxter; nephew, Earl Whitefield of Clinton, TN.
