Funeral services for Dr. Sherwell Tolleson, age 83, of Cookeville, will be at 12 noon Tuesday August 14 at Cookeville First United Methodist Church. Dr. Martin Thielen and Rev. Rob Wheeler will officiate. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 10 a.m. until service time at the church. Graveside services and interment will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday August 15 at Douglas Cemetery in Douglas, Alabama, located at 9147 AL Highway 75, Douglas, AL, 35964. Sherwell passed away Monday morning August 13, 2018 at his home. He was born March 19, 1935 in Marshall County, Alabama, to the late Alvin and Lessie Avery Tolleson. Sherwell studied at Snead Junior College in Boaz, Alabama, and University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, for undergraduate work. He taught high school for three years in his home community of Douglas, Alabama. He then received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and Counselor Education through a National Defense Education Act Fellowship in the early 60s at University of Alabama. He spent his 36 year career teaching and chairing the Educational Psychology department at Tennessee Technological University. He loved teaching and counseling and impacted many lives throughout his career. He was active in First United Methodist Church including training and leading Stephen Ministry leaders. He was an active member of the Cookeville mental health community including working with the foster care system and he and Barbara personally provided a home and support to many individuals throughout the years. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara McCreless Tolleson, who he married September 1st, 1957; daughter, Andrea (Ben) Edwards, son, Thomas Tolleson; grandchildren, Avery Edwards (Quinton) Westrich, Becca Edwards, Jon Edwards, Jackson (Whitney) Tolleson, Grace Tolleson, Klay Tolleson, and their mother, Michele Sawyer Tolleson; and great-grandchildren, Layla Westrich and Amelia Tolleson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Klawyn Seth Tolleson. The family appreciates the wonderful caregivers of Kindred Hospice and the private caregivers who have provided such loving care during these past months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cookeville First United Methodist Food Pantry or the First United Methodist Music Ministry, 165 East Broad Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.
