Mr. Mitchell passed away peacefully March 9, 2018 at his home. He was loved and will be sadly missed. He was born August 3, 1925 in Putnam County to the late Emmett Mitchell and Notie Williams Mitchell. He was a descendent of three prominent land grant families of both White and Putnam Counties. Mr. Mitchell graduated from Cookeville Central High School where he played football. Following graduation, he worked at the K-25 uranium facility of the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge, TN until the end of World War II. Mr. Mitchell earned a bachelor's degree in Business Administration from Tennessee Technological University in 1950. He was the manager of the Cookeville Shirt Company and later established manufacturing facilities in various locations in Tennessee. In 1970, he established his own business, Fashion Mart, that incorporated five independent manufacturing operations. These ranged from the garment industry, automotive parts and the collegiate and pro-football equipments. He was a member of the Willow Avenue Church of Christ as well as a spiritual member of the Church of Christ Family. His humor, kindness, determination and self-sacrifice were his enduring qualities that touched everyone. He was an avid gardener. He was a Vanderbilt Fan. He was also an environmentalist and conservationist of wildlife and natural resources. He practiced these on his farm that had been in his family since 1810. He lived by his motto, "Make everyday count." He is preceded in death by his wife, Bobbie R. Mitchell (married June 9, 1947-died June 8, 2015); a brother Clifford Mitchell of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Elese Hicks of Mt. Juliet, TN and Evelyn Bartlett of Cookeville, TN. He is survived by his sons, Sammy E. Mitchell and Mario M. Mitchell of Cookeville, TN. His family would like to express their gratitude to Dr. Brian Waggoner and staff, Dr. Lelani Acosta and Renee at Vanderbilt Neurology, the staff at Deaconess, Visiting Angels and Caris Healthcare for his care.
