Dr. Rural Allen Peace died peacefully with his family by his side on January 5, 2020 in Sparta, Tennessee at the age of 89. Rural is survived by his wife of 54 years Nancy; daughter, Christie and son-in-law Deaver Shattuck; siblings, Charles Peace and Joyce Peace George and grandchildren Alan, Raney, Reed, Kylie and Nancy Grace Shattuck. He is preceded in death by his mother and father; siblings, Bill, Jay, Otho and Curtis Peace, Eula Henley, Cosette Alonso, Maxine Burnham, and Eileen Locke and son, Alan Peace. Rural was born on September 16, 1930 in Meigs County, Tennessee to Bertie Belle Herd Peace and Charles Webster Peace. He served in the United States Army for two years and was stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He graduated from the University of Tennessee with Bachelors and Masters degrees in Agriculture and a doctorate degree in Curriculum Instruction. He married Nancy Arissa Coffee in 1965 and had two loving children, Christie Eve Peace(Shattuck) and Alan Ward Peace. He dedicated his career to educating young people and adults as a District Supervisor for Agricultural Extension Services for the University of Tennessee. He inspired so many with his lifelong example of positivity, selflessness, and humility. He was beloved by all who knew him for his gentle spirit, kindness and unfailing faith and optimism. Rural was a deeply faithful man who spent his life serving his family, his community, and the Lord. He was a deacon and Sunday school superintendent at the First Baptist Church of Cookeville, an active member of The Rotary Club of Cookeville, a board member on the Tennessee Heart Association, and a recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award for the National Association of Extension Service. He was also a dedicated golfer, talented gardener, loving grandfather, and lifelong fan of the UT Volunteers. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 11th at 2:00 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Bill Stone will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Overton County Memorial Gardens in Livingston. His family will receive friends Friday from 4:00pm until 7:00pm and again Saturday from 12:00pm until service time at the funeral home. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Rural's life. Donald Boles, Harold Underwood, Dr. Jim Neal, Dr. Deaver Shattuck, Alan Shattuck, Reed Shattuck, Mark Murphy and Bob Luna will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Rotary Club of Cookeville. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Life Care Center of Sparta for their loving care and dedication.
