He was born September 8, 1924 in the former coal mining town of Shoopman, KY to the late William and Florence Goslin Pierce. Mr. Pierce was a Veteran of World War II, serving as a member of the US Army in the European Theatre. Shortly after entering the war, he was taken as a German POW and endured 14 difficult months as a prisoner. When his camp was finally liberated and the enemy flag was replaced with the US Flag, Robert fondly recalled that seeing the US Flag was the most beautiful sight he had ever seen. His love, care and deep patriotism for his country remained with him his entire life. He was employed as a worker in the iron industry, mostly in Waterford, MI with Ironworkers Local 25. He and his late wife Coneva moved to Cookeville in 1986. He was a member of Collegeside Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Coneva Reese Pierce; brother, Alaie Pierce; and by sisters, Cora Bell, Gladys Marie Cummings, Alice Hines, Evelyn Trent, Nellie Phillips and Juanita Pierce. He is survived by his daughters, Brenda Hayes and husband Geary of Cookeville and Barbara Powers of Auburn Hills, MI; son, James E. Pierce and wife Sherry of Waterford, MI; grandchildren, Steven Powers, Holly Taylor, Preston Hayes and Megan Hayes; and by a great granddaughter, Paige Powers.
