Richard "Rick" Merinar, a cherished family man known for his loyalty and sarcastic sense of humor, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2024, in Nashville, TN. Born on November 15, 1951, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Rick's journey through life was marked by laughter, generosity, and love for the great outdoors.
Rick was a proud graduate of the University of Tennessee Knoxville, where he not only received a top-notch education but also cultivated a lifelong passion for Tennessee Volunteers football. His professional career was dedicated to the Tennessee Department of Forestry, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2017. Throughout his career, Rick was known for his friendly demeanor and his commitment to preserving the natural beauty of Tennessee's landscapes.
As a man who thrived in the presence of nature, Rick found joy in activities such as golf, camping, and tending to his flowering beds. His love for bonfires under the starry sky was contagious, and he could often be found sharing stories and laughter with friends and family around the warm glow of the flames.
Rick was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Benton Merinar and Zelma Rose Postlewait Merinar. He leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Betty Hanafee Merinar; his loving daughters, Kelsey Merinar and Jessica (Steven) Kirsch; and his cherished grandchildren, Hayden Davis, Blakely Paige, Kaya Kirsch, Aubrey Kirsch, and Gavin Kirsch. His brother, David Robert (Cindy) Merinar, and nephew, Cody Merinar, also survive him.
Memorial contributions are suggested to be made to American Cancer Society's Memorial Foundation Hope Lodge, a free service available to cancer patients traveling to Nashville for treatment. Hope Lodge is where Rick and his wife were guests for the past eight years and truly became their home away from home, bringing comfort and support during their brave battle with cancer.
