Richard Watson Mathieson, a selfless man of generosity, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2024, in Cookeville, Tennessee at the age of 87. He was born on February 25, 1937, in Homer City, Pennsylvania to the late Robert M. and Beatrice Lloyd Mathieson. Richard's life was a testament to his thoughtful nature and his unwavering commitment to his family and friends.
Richard, a proud graduate of Laura Lamar High School in his hometown, went on to earn a Bachelor's degree from Bethany College in West Virginia. His academic achievements laid the foundation for a successful career, culminating in his retirement as the Chief Financial Officer at Pullman-Peabody. His professional life was marked by the same integrity and dedication that he brought to every aspect of his existence.
He proudly served his country, as he served in the U.S. Navy.
A man of faith, Richard was a member of the Presbyterian church, where he found strength and faith. His belief system was the cornerstone of his life, guiding him in his daily actions and his interactions with others.
Richard's passions extended beyond his professional and spiritual life. He was an avid golfer, finding joy and relaxation on the greens. His hands were rarely still, as he was also skilled at whittling wood, creating intricate pieces that reflected his love for nature and wildlife. Those who knew Richard will remember him as a loyal, honest, and giving individual, always ready to lend a hand or share a word of encouragement.
Above all, Richard cherished his family. He is survived by his two sons, Richard C. Mathieson and his wife Shawntelle, and Christian D. Mathieson, all of Cookeville. His legacy continues through his granddaughters, Ashlynn M. and Kaitlyn E. Mathieson, and his great-granddaughter, Brianna Mathieson. Each of them carries a piece of Richard's spirit, his lessons of kindness and compassion echoing through their lives.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Delane Joyce Mathieson; son, Charles Robert Mathieson; brother, Robert Lloyd Mathieson; and a sister, Carol J. Honess.
