Rebecca Milner

d. April 17, 2019

Rebecca Bartlett was born to S.C.Bartlett and Grady Kelley Bartlett in East Nashville on September 3, 1929. She grew up in East Nashville, and attended East Nashville High School. She attended Blue Mountain College, in Mississippi and Peabody College, in Nashville. She married Ed M. Milner on April 2, 1949. The young couple lived in South Georgia and later in Hattiesburg, Mississippi where Ed was in the Naval Stores Business. Their first child, Ed, Jr .,was born in Macon, GA. The second child, Tom, and their daughter, Julia were born in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. In 1956 the young family moved to Decatur, AL, where Ed joined the Chemstrand Corporation. While in Decatur, Becky became City Wide PTA President, and was the founding president of a League of Women Voters organization.. In 1961 the family made a long camping trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch. Shortly afterward they were moved to an operation in East Providence, RI. In 1964 the family lived in Barrington, RI. The boys were in Scouting and Ed was a Scoutmaster. The family bought a sailboat for fun on Narraganset Bay. Becky became a Girl Scout leader. There was a long camping trip to the Maritime provinces of Canada. Becky was active in church study groups. The family joined the First Baptist Church in America, in Providence. There was a brief interlude in New York, commuting from New Jersey, and with Ed's appointment of Director of Manufacturing in Monsanto's New Enterprise Division the family moved again, this time to Kirkwood, MO, a St. Louis suburb. Life in the St Louis area began to blossom. Becky was elected to the Kirkwood school Board, in the midst of troubling times for education. Becky also took advantage of nearby Eden Seminary and other religious education opportunities, The family learned canoeing, with numerous trips to the Ozarks. Becky was a superb bow paddler. We also learned to cross country ski. In 1986 Ed was transferred to Dalton GA. By this time Ed, Jr was in naval aviation and Tom was at the Coast Guard Academy. Julie's oboe interest led her to Hamline University, and later to the University of Minnesota. Ed and Becky gained skill in Cross Country skiing, with trips to Vermont and Colorado. At Ed's retirement, the couple moved back to St. Louis, but started work on a "camp" in the Adirondacks, of upstate New York. We named the camp "Frogmore", related to a plantation on the South Carolina Coast and the home of "Frogmore Stew". In many ways our life really began in the Adirondacks. Becky was active in starting a community theatre group, assisting in productions and doing a Kate Smith impersonation. She was also active in the North Creek United Methodist Church, helping with study groups. We also traveled to Canton, NY , Middlebury, VT and Albany, NY to attend conferences with leaders of the Jesus Seminar and other noted Christian scholars. Becky was active in summertime activities such as Vacation Bible School. In the Hamlet of North Creek, the VBS was a joint activity between the Methodist Church, and its next door neighbor, the Catholic church. The kids benefited from the association. At Becky's suggestion we gave a carillon to the Methodist church. We lived, and thrived, in the North Country until 2010, when advancing age and disabilities mandated a move back South to a milder climate – and Cookeville, TN was the destination. Our new base was on Kirby Lane, in Cookeville. Son Ed,Jr. and his wife, Sylvia had retired to nearby Jackson County. We knew the territory and had family close by. From 2010 until 2016 we stayed in town, then made a mandated move to the Life Care Center of Sparta, TN. The love of Becky's life was the Our Town Theatre Group. She was one of its organizers. She was an active leader, working all the way from costumes to acting. She served as Stage Manager for the play "Steel Magnolias".The group, with the guidance of Lyle Dye, did quality productions throughout the Adirondack park and in nearby Glens Falls. To honor of Becky's OTTG legacy, we request that , in lieu of, flowers the money be donated to : Mr. Arthur Green, Treasurer Our Town Theatre Group 2263 Burnt Hill Rd.
