Ray Flanagan

Elbert Ray Flanagan, known affectionately as Ray, passed away peacefully on August 30, 2024, in Mt. Juliet, TN, at the age of 87. Born on January 24, 1937, in Pikeville, KY, his early years in Kentucky would shape the remarkable man he would become—resilient, warm-hearted, and eternally optimistic.

Ray's formative years were spent in the nurturing embrace of his hometown, where he graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1955. Upon completion, with a sense of duty and patriotism, Ray joined the Air Force on November 16, 1955, serving his country with honor and distinction. He was honorably discharged on August 28, 1959.

After his military service, his thirst for knowledge and commitment to personal growth led him to further his education at Western Kentucky State University until 1961. Then he worked for the American Tobacco Company until January 1964. At that time, Ray and a buddy were on their way to Florida to live. They ran out of gas in Nashville. Not having much money, they went to a preacher at the First Baptist Church on Broadway for advice. The preacher asked if they had a watch. A Timex watch paid for 2 nights at the WMCA. He decided to stay in Nashville and got a job at Sears, Roebuck & Company. He moved to Capital Towers on a 3-month credit. While living there, he met Janet Foutch who would later meet and marry Ray’s brother, Russell.

Ray embarked on a fulfilling career with Dupont where his work ethic, integrity, and dedication to excellence were evident to all who had the pleasure of working alongside him. He worked at Dupont from 1966 and retired on December 1, 1986. He then worked at Reemay, Old Hickory, TN from December 1986 until January 14, 1992. His professional life was marked not only by his achievements but also by the lasting friendships he forged and the lives he impacted through his association involvement.

Ray's love for life extended well beyond his professional endeavors. He was an avid golfer, often found on the green, perfecting his swing and savoring the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. At the age of 79, he shot a 72. He had 5 hole-in-ones! His passion for sports was not limited to the links; he was a devoted Kentucky Wildcats fan, following basketball with the zeal of a true supporter. Ray's enthusiasm for his teams was infectious, and he was known to recount the most thrilling games with an energy that could captivate any audience.

Ray had a gift for storytelling. His tales were woven with humor, wisdom, and an uncanny ability to bring characters to life. He never met a stranger, and his open-hearted approach to life meant that he left an indelible mark on countless individuals fortunate enough to cross his path.

He was preceded in death by his parents Hollis Russell Flanagan, Sr. and Genevieve Grimes Flanagan, his brothers Jim Brownfield and Hollis Russell Flanagan, Jr., and sister Susan Flanagan Wright.

Family was the cornerstone of Ray's life. Ray's legacy is carried on by his devoted wife of 50 years, Evangeline "Angie" Tatum Flanagan, and his stepdaughter, Lisa Stewart, who will forever cherish his memory. He also leaves behind his dear siblings, Mary Parrish, sister-in-law Janet Foutch Flanagan, and half-siblings Patricia “Pat” Flanagan, William “Bill” (Beverly) Brownfield, William Hennigan, Willia Brownfield (John) Hennigan, Joe Brownfield, “like” a brother Dennis (Gloria) Jenkins and numerous nieces and nephews. Each family member will hold onto the unique memories and lessons Ray imparted upon them.

Ray's departure has left a void that cannot be filled, but his spirit will continue to live on through the stories told, the laughter shared, and the lives he touched. He was a man of great character, a beacon of kindness, and a true friend to all. His influence will be felt for generations, and his memory will be treasured by all who knew and loved him. As we bid farewell to Elbert Ray Flanagan, we take solace in knowing that his was a life well-lived, full of passion, purpose, and an abundance of love.

A private family gathering will be held at a later date.
