Ray Collins

March 4, 1928 — June 19, 2024

D. Ray Collins, known by friends and family as Ray, passed away peacefully on June 19, 2024, at his residence in Cookeville. Born on March 4, 1928, in Ardmore, Oklahoma, Ray was a man of honor, integrity, and kindness, whose presence was a blessing to all who knew him.

Ray's life was one of service and dedication. A proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served his country with distinction before embarking on a long and successful career with American Airlines. As a flight engineer, Ray's expertise and commitment to safety were instrumental in his 38 years of service, during which he earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues.

Family was the cornerstone of Ray's life. He is survived by his loving son, Doug Collins (Dottie Butera); his cherished grandchildren, Lori Collins (Teddy Durham), Dennis Collins, and Sarah Collins (Noah Cape); and his adored great-grandchild, Lily Durham. Ray was a devoted husband to his late wife of 70 years, Ruby Patterson Collins, and a caring father to his late daughter, Debbie Collins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil Ray Collins and Abigail Barnett Collins, and his sister, Betty Hendrickson.

Known to his friends as "Top Cat," Ray was an avid outdoorsman in his younger years, with a passion for fishing and hunting that was only rivaled by his love for the Atlanta Braves. His easygoing nature and ability to connect with others made him well-liked in all circles, and his warm smile and gentle demeanor will be deeply missed.

Ray's life was a testament to the joy of simple pleasures and the importance of family and friends. His legacy will live on in the stories shared by those who loved him and the countless lives he touched with his generous spirit.

A memorial graveside service to honor the life and memory of Ray will be held at a later date at Williamson Memorial Gardens in Franklin, Tennessee.
