COOKEVILLE, TN- CMSgt. Ralph Bernard Lewis, a man of great faith, love, and wisdom, passed away suddenly on September 28, 2023, in Cookeville, TN. Born on November 17, 1937, in Harlan County, KY, Ralph was the beloved son of the late John Wilson Lewis and Golda Creech Lewis. He was also predeceased by his brothers Harold, Raymond, and Larry Lewis and by an adopted granddaughter, Chantel "Alyjah" Gomez.


Ralph was an exceptional man who led an extraordinary life. He received his bachelor's degree from Rollins College in Orlando, FL. His ambition and dedication led him to a prestigious career in the United States Air Force, where he loyally served for 24 years, retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant, which is the 9th and highest enlisted rank in the U.S. Air Force. Ralph also enjoyed a successful second career at Harris Corporation in Palm Bay, FL, from which he further retired.


A lifelong sports enthusiast, Ralph had a particular love for golf and the University of Kentucky Athletics. His love for the game was only surpassed by his love for God, his family, and his church. He was a devout Christian who dedicated over 40 years of his life teaching Sunday school. His Thursday men's Bible study group was a testament to his enduring faith and commitment to his Lord.


Ralph was a beacon of light and a pillar of strength to his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Janice Akers Lewis, and their son, Ralph Dwayne (Joyce) Lewis. He was a cherished grandfather to Brent (Nicole) Lewis, Brandon (Beth) Lewis, and Janice (Ashley) Anne Lewis and a doting great-grandfather to Gentry, Gabriel, Charlee, and Izzie. Ralph also leaves behind his brother, Gary (Sue) Lewis, and sister, Helen (Jack) Clark. Ralph also held a special place in his heart for his adopted daughter and granddaughter, April (Steve) Raines and Cady Frazier.


Known for his wisdom and kindness, Ralph was a best friend to many. His ability to make anyone feel welcomed and loved was one of his many admirable qualities. His unwavering faith, his devotion to his family, and his commitment to his community made him a respected figure in the lives of all who knew him.


Ralph Bernard Lewis lived a full and rewarding life, marked by service, faith, love, and an unyielding dedication to the things he held dear. His legacy will live on in the hearts of those he touched with his wisdom, love, and faith. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.


Memorial services with military honors for Ralph will be held Saturday, October 7, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Poplar Grove Baptist Church. Dr. Jason Groe will officiate.


His family will receive friends Saturday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the church.
