Polly Shanks

Funeral services for Mrs. Pauline "Polly" Shanks, age 94 of Cookeville, will be held Sunday April 3 at 4 p.m. in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Head officiating. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Mrs. Shanks family will receive friends Sunday from 2 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Shanks died Friday morning April 1, 2016 in Signature Health Care Center in Algood. She was born October 13, 1921 in Overton County, Tennessee to the late John Lewis and Doris Elizabeth Mofield Speck. Mrs. Shanks and her late husband were co-owners of the former Shanks Hotel in Cookeville She was an administrative assistant with the legal department for the US Corp of Engineers when Dale Hollow Dam was being built and also was an administrative assistant for the US Army Recruiting Office located in the Cookeville Post Office. She retired after nearly 34 years with the State of Tennessee, Cookeville Office, Department of Employment and Security as an Employer Relations Representative and Interviewer Supervisor. She was a life-long member of Cookeville First Baptist Church and the Senior Adult Sunday School Class. Member of the House and Garden Club; former Charter member of the Cookeville Golf and Country Club; former member of the Evening Town and Gown Club and a long-time member of IADES (International Association of Employment Security). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Herbie Richmond "Pip" Shanks; three sisters, Lucille Guenther, Mildred Mahler, and Jonnie Shelton; three brothers, Haskell, Fred, and Cecil Speck; and two nephews, John Curtis Guenther and Richard Speck. Survivors include nephews, William Howard (Dorothy) Mahler, JR, Ricky (Shannon) Shelton, Randy Shelton; nieces Cecilia (Philip) Hudson and Debbie (Ray) DeLee; and several great nieces and nephews.
