Funeral services for Mr. Ottis Tillman (OT) Estes Jr., age 100, of Cookeville, will be held at 3 p.m Sunday September 2 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Dr. Martin Thielen and Rev. Rob Wheeler will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 1 - 3 p.m. Mr. Estes passed away Wednesday August 29, 2018 at Heritage Pointe Senior Living in Cookeville. He was born November 25, 1917 in Dallas, TX to the late Ottis Tillman Sr. and Elizabeth Nobles Estes. Mr. Estes graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy class of 1940. He served in the Pacific during WWII contributing to various landings including several at Guadalcanal. During his 20 years of service with the Coast Guard, he earned his Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering at MIT, taught engineering at the USCG Academy, and commanded the USCG cutter Absecon. He later served as an Associate Professor in the Engineering Department at Tennessee Tech University where he retired after 20 years of service. He was a long time member of Cookeville First United Methodist Church, the Cookeville Kiwanis Club, and an avid golfer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Byrd Estes; two sisters, Georgaleen Estes Sample and Flora Mae Cox. He is survived by four children Jerry Estes,Woodstock, GA; Peggy (John) Coster,Magnolia,TX; Steve (Brenda) Estes,Hixson,TN; and David (Colleen) Estes,Ocean Springs,MS; many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Sid Gilbreath, Peggy Evans, Ken Reinard, Pat and Donna Quillen, Jean Cody, Preston Cody, Tracy Cody, Betty Henry and members of the Backslider's Class and his bible study group at Cookeville FUMC. The family wishes to acknowledge the caring support from Heritage Pointe and Kindred Hospice staff. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Cookeville First United Methodist Church, 165 East Broad Street, Cookeville, TN 38501.
