Nancy Jean Murphy

Nancy (Galvin) Murphy, age 69, died at her home in Cookeville, TN on May 23, 2012. She was born in Detroit, MI to Edward F. Galvin and Marion (White) Galvin and raised in Hastings on the Hudson, NY. In 1962, she graduated from Chandler School for Women in Boston, MA and went on to work as an executive secretary at State Street Bank and later Air Pre-Heater Company. She was married in 1968 at the Second Congregational Church of Greenfield, MA, after which she and her husband lived for a year in Schweinfurt, Germany. Upon returning, they made their home in Wellesley, MA, where she co-founded Cabbages & Kings Catering Company, actively served in the Junior Women's Club and thrived in her beloved roles of mother and homemaker. In 1985, she moved with her family to Northfield, MA where she was a member of the Garden Club and the Fortnightly Club and worked for the Church Street Home of Greenfield, MA. She and her husband moved to Cookeville, TN in 2009. Throughout her life, Nancy excelled at every endeavor. She displayed a refined creativity with a particular flair for flower gardening and the decorative and culinary arts. Summers spent at Camp Wyoda in Fairlee, VT and on the White family farm in Colrain, MA were a lasting source of joy to her and contributed to her lifelong love of the outdoors and of all things equine. She took great pleasure in collecting family genealogy and personal histories, cherished friendships forged throughout her life and was an avid and lively correspondent. Nancy was forever quick to laugh and to befriend, sharing her conspiratorial smile and warmth with loved ones and strangers alike. No detail was too small for her careful consideration and she was generous with her ideas and opinions. Those who knew her will miss her kindness, humor and incredible devotion. She leaves behind her husband of 44 years, Kevin Murphy of Cookeville, TN and daughter Dana Murphy of Oakland, CA. According to her wishes, no service will be held. She will be interred at the Brick School Cemetery in Colrain, MA, with a celebration of her life to be held at a later date.
