Myrna Joanne Brockmann Estes passed away peacefully on January 29, 2024, in Marietta, GA. Born on November 24, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, Myrna's life journey was one marked by love, adventure, graciousness, and service. She was a beacon of kindness and generosity to all who knew her.
The Estes family sadly announces Myrna's departure, cherishing the memories of a life well-lived. Myrna was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Ernest A. and Hilda P. Brockmann, her beloved husband of 37 years, Dr. R. Don Estes, her sister, Mary Jane Hefley, and her brother, David Brockmann. She leaves behind a legacy of love with her daughter, Joanna Arnhart and husband Thomas of Cookeville; son, Brian and wife Charlotte Estes of Marietta, GA and her granddaughter, Sadie Estes. She is also survived by brother, Rev. James E. Brockmann of Mesa, Arizona.
Myrna's early years were spent in Stuttgart, Arkansas, where she attended St. John's Lutheran School and later graduated from Stuttgart High School. She met her future husband Don in 1962 and their courtship continued until he left for an overseas assignment with the United Nations for one year. Towards the end of that year, Don called Myrna to ask if she would marry him and join him in the Philippines. Myrna agreed and traveled overseas with her wedding dress in tow to marry Don, the love of her life. The couple were married on December 24, 1963 in Hong Kong and lived in Manila while Don continued his work with the United Nations. Before settling back in the United States, they embarked on a six-month journey through Europe and Asia, an experience that would forever enrich their lives.
Upon their return, Myrna and Don lived in Athens, GA, and Blacksburg, VA, before making Cookeville their home in 1972. She owned Estes Furniture on the square in Cookeville for seven years, creating memories and friendships that lasted a lifetime. Even in her later years, she took great joy in hearing from customers who still cherished the furniture purchased from her store.
Myrna's spirit of service extended beyond her professional life. She was a faithful member of the Cookeville First Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon, elder, and church secretary. Her commitment to her community was evident as she proudly served as a Coordinator of the Putnam County Clean Commission, collaborating with the Putnam County School system to promote environmental awareness and recycling initiatives.
Never one to slow down, upon her 'retirement,' Myrna dedicated her time as the volunteer coordinator with the Highlands Visitor Center in Cookeville. Her caring nature and warm presence made her a true friend to many within the community.
Described as loving, kind, and generous, Myrna's graciousness touched the hearts of all who were fortunate to cross her path. Her life was a testament to the power of giving, whether it was through her time, her smile, or her unwavering support.
Myrna's final chapter was spent in Marietta, GA, where she moved in October 2023 to spend cherished moments with her granddaughter, Sadie, who was the light of her life. Her love and laughter will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
