Mr. John James Larkin Sr.

John James Larkin, Sr. passed away at age 92 in Monterey, Tennessee on January 15, 2016. He was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky on March 27, 1923 to the late George Robert Larkin and Mary Lowry Larkin. Shortly after graduating from Lafayette High School, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps. He served during World War II, as a First Lieutenant. He flew B-17s and B-29s until the end of the war. Upon discharge in 1946, he returned to the University of Kentucky, earning degrees in Business Administration and Law. He was a member of the editorial board of the Kentucky Law Review. After graduating, he joined the FBI and was stationed in New York City, as a field agent. He then moved to Oak Ridge, Tennessee with the Atomic Energy Commission. In 1968, he was appointed as a Federal Judge for the US Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission, a position held until his retirement. He worked on many projects during his government career and travelled extensively. He was a member of the Kentucky and Florida Bar Associations. A lifetime Episcopalian, he attended daily service at the Orlando Cathedral after his retirement. He also was the co-owner of the Estero Island Inn on Ft. Myers Beach, which afforded him many memories, and years of enjoyment with friends and family. A gentle and compassionate man, Jack loved animals and had many pets dear to him. He especially enjoyed having wildlife and animals on his farm in Lexington. John is survived by his devoted companion of many years, Sue Brandon of Monterey; his son Dr. John Larkin, Cincinnati; his daughter, Lovell L Larkin, Lexington; grandchildren Chase Barnett, Sydney Larkin and John Larkin III; and his former wife, Libby Larkin. He is also survived by Patrick, Michael, Richard, Tammy, Bobby and Gary Larkin - children of his deceased brother Robert Noble Larkin, The family wishes to thank Sue Brandon for her devotion of over 45 years and especially for her loving care during his final days. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his honor to the Lexington Humane Society. Visitation will be on Tuesday, Milward-Broadway, 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM followed by a 2 PM graveside service at the Lexington Cemetery.
