Mildred West Simcox passed from this life on Thursday, July 19, after a lengthy illness at Signature HealthCARE of Putnam County. She was born Monday January 1, 1929 in Algood to the late Herbert and Winnie Harp West of Algood. She graduated from Algood High School in 1947. She was the first and only member of her family to graduate from college, graduating from Tennessee Polytechnic Institute with a degree in Education. She was an outstanding teacher, first at Algood High School, and then at Cookeville Junior High School. In 1956, she married Walter Simcox who was also a teacher. Later they opened the Cookeville School of Business, teaching business skills to youth and adults from all over the area. Mildred loved her family and especially her nieces and nephews, her church and her former students. She was a strong woman – a Steel Magnolia – with strong faith; she was independent and caring. She had a wonderful sense of humor and could hold her own in any conversation with the "West Girls" - and that was an accomplishment in itself! In addition to her parents and husband, she was proceeded in death by her three sisters, Mary Alice Netherton, Georgia Lee Allen, and Frances Roach; and two brothers, L.B. and Earl West. Mildred will be remembered as a wonderful teacher, a loving aunt, caring friend and good neighbor. Survivors include four nieces, Joy (Sam) Short, Mary Lee (Jr) Brown, Melinda (Howard) Bilbrey, and Amy (Joe) Rector; seven nephews, John Allen, Jimmy (Joyce) Allen, Jerry (Vickie) Allen, Tommy (Debe) West, Mike (Janice) West, Tim Roach, and Scott (Tracy) Roach; and many extended family members. Funeral services will be held Monday July 23 at 3 p.m. in the Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home with Rev. Mark Gaw officiating. Interment will follow in Crest Lawn Cemetery. Mildred's family will receive friends Monday from 1 p.m. until service time at the funeral home. Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home in charge of arrangements (931) 526-6111.
