AUSTIN, TX-Michael Wayne Vandervort, age 81, passed away on Tuesday, October 10, 2023. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, October 18 at 1 p.m. in San Angelo, Texas at the Fairmont Cemetery. A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at a later date in Austin.
Mike was born December 8, 1941 in San Angelo, Texas to the late Daniel "Byrl" Vandervort and Effie Stewart Vandervort.
Mike earned a bachelor's degree from Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches, Texas and a master's degree from the University of Texas at Austin. After obtaining his Certification in Public Accounting (CPA), Mike began his career at the University of Texas (UT) as Director of Internal Audits and as Associate Vice President of Business Affairs. He worked at UT for 37 years and made many close, lasting friendships during his time there. Mike was a respected master at developing his staff. Many departments across campus looked to him to find individuals who were ready to contribute their talents in new, expanded roles.
Mike retired from UT in August 2018. While still working at the University, Mike also taught classes within the McCombs School of Business. Prior to his UT career, he worked at the Nacogdoches School District, the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, and in the Audit Division of the Texas Department of Human Services.
He enjoyed spending time outdoors, particularly fishing on Cedar Creek Lake, where he owned a lake house. He had a wonderful, folksy sense of humor and was not hesitant to joke with and play pranks on coworkers, friends and family. His easy laughter was frequent and contagious, and he always put the needs of others before himself. Mike was an avid animal lover, and it wasn’t difficult to catch him sneaking treats to his daughter Kacey's dog Journey.
A lifetime fan of his beloved Texas Longhorns, Mike never missed a chance to attend football games. He especially loved hosting Longhorn fans at his lake house before and after the Texas/Oklahoma game in Dallas. His friends will cherish those memories of good times at the lake.
His family wishes to express their gratitude to Linda Nash for the excellent and compassionate care she gave to him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Dan Lee Vandervort, a sister, Sharon Silvey, and by his father-in-law, A.B. Carrington.
Mike is survived by his wife Pam Carrington; daughter Kacey Vandervort; mother-in-law Bobbie Carrington; sister-in-law Patty Oliphant; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends throughout Tennessee and Texas.
In lieu of flowers, we encourage you to make donations to a charity of your choice in his name.
