BAXTER CHAPEL-Michael "Mike" David Helms, a beloved farmer and dedicated family man, passed away on Monday, November 4, 2024, at his home in Baxter, TN, at the age of 66. Born on December 4, 1957, in Cookeville, TN, Mike lived a life deeply rooted in family and community.
He attended Upperman High School, where he developed a lifelong passion for sports, particularly basketball and football. Mike was known for his unwavering support of the Upperman Bees, proudly cheering for them through every game. His love for the outdoors was evident in the various activities he enjoyed, including family get-togethers, attending stock sales, flipping houses, and riding his tractor and motorcycle.
Mike cherished his family immensely. He is survived by his devoted wife, Valerie Sue Browning Helms of Baxter, children, Thomas Earl Evans, Derrick Lee Helms, and Jacob Lee Daniel Helms, Erica Lashay Helms all of Baxter, Summer Ann (Mychael) Smith of Cookeville, Lisa Marie (Philip) Durr of Marble Hill, MO, and Nicole Genarie Bane of Buffalo Valley, TN, brought him great joy. Additionally, Mike is remembered fondly by his brother, Larry Helms of Gallatin, TN, and sister, Connie (Bill) Maynard of Baxter. He also leaves behind seven grandchildren: Wade James Chaffins, Bailey Morgan Matthews, Hannah Marie Gillin, Michael Patrick Helms, Anthony Isaiah Helms, Carson Hunter Johnson, and Paislee Elizabeth Johnson, nieces and nephew, Christina (Tony) Mick, Mary Helms and Matthew Helms each of whom was a light in his life.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, George Odell and Dixie Lee Palmer Helms, as well as his grandparents, Matthew & Vallie Medley Helms and Robert Peay & Mary Wallace Palmer, and a niece, Kimberly Faye Maynard.
A Celebration of Life will be held in his honor on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the Boma Community Center, located at 3500 Boma Community Center Road in Baxter, TN. The family invites all who knew and loved Mike to bring a covered dish and join them in celebrating the remarkable life he led and the lasting impact he had on everyone around him.
