Merlin Jackson Horne, Sr., age 70, of Cookeville, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, December 1, 2023. Known affectionately as Merlin to his friends and family, he was born on March 23, 1953, in Lawrenceburg, TN, to the late Roy Neal Horne and Viola Elizabeth Reddick Horne. His warm presence and jovial spirit left an indelible mark on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Merlin was a proud graduate of Lawrence County High School, class of 1971. His thirst for knowledge and love for his community led him to further his education at Tennessee Tech University. His commitment to serving others was evident through his honorable service in the United States Navy, where he dedicated two years to his country with great patriotism and valor.
Following his military service, Merlin began a long and respected career at Office Mart in Cookeville. He joined the company in 1985 and quickly became a beloved member of the team. His colleagues appreciated his handy skills and friendly demeanor. Merlin retired in 2015 after 28 years of dedicated service, leaving behind a legacy of loyalty and countless fond memories among his coworkers and customers.
Outside of work, Merlin was a man of simple yet passionate interests. He had a deep appreciation for music, a hobby that provided him with both solace and joy. Merlin could often be found playing a game of solitaire, where he exhibited the same patience and strategy that he applied to various aspects of his life. His love for treasure hunting at Goodwill was well-known; he delighted in finding hidden gems and sharing them with those he loved.
Merlin's big personality was as expansive as his heart. He was renowned for his punctuality-or rather, his consistent lack thereof-but his friends and family knew that waiting for Merlin meant receiving the gift of his company, which was always worth the extra time.
Those who knew Merlin will remember him as a funny, handy, and friendly man. He approached life with a sense of humor that was as natural to him as breathing. His hands were rarely still, always fixing, building, or improving something around him. And above all, he was a friend to all, generous with his time, his talents, and his attention. Merlin's family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of AHC Bethesda who lovingly cared for him for almost two years.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Susan; daughter, Stephanie (Daniel) Alfaro of Cookeville; sons, Jackie Horne of Cookeville and Tim (Jonissa) Horne of Sparta; four brothers, Dorsey and Jim Horne of both of Murfreesboro, Joe Horne of Franklin, and John Horne of Lawrenceburg; sister, Beverly Lindsey of Killen, AL; three grandchildren, Aurora Horne, Henry Alfaro and Benjamin Alfaro and granddaughter-to-be, Elizabeth Horne.
