Jean Grizzard

BAXTER CHAPEL-Mattie Jean Grizzard, formerly known as Mattie Jean Hargis, passed away on September 24, 2024 at the Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Born on March 26, 1932 in Baxter, she lived a life rich in love and community, cherished by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

A member of the Union Grove Free Will Baptist Church, Jean devoted herself to her faith and community. Her work life included positions at Acme Boot and the Cookeville Pants Factory, and she ultimately retired from Eagle Furniture where she served as a seamstress. With a passion for sewing and crafting, she shared her talents through handmade creations which brought joy to many. In addition to her creating spirit, Jean found great pleasure in playing dominos and uniquely relished the time spent with family and friends, forming memories that will last a lifetime.

Jean is survived by her beloved grandchildren, Sandy (John) Gilbert, Tony (Ashley) Maxwell, Misty (Tim) Burton, Brent (Crystal) Lee, Dana (Pat) Stewart, and Jamie Rodgers. She was also the proud grandmother of twelve great-grandchildren: Tabitha (John) Keisling, Nathan Lee, Shelby Lee, Annabelle Lee, Caleb, Zachary, and Perry Stewart, Faith (Austin) Glenn, Zane Maxwell, Carrie (Steven) Tiebout, Austin (Sarah) Burton, and Krissie Burton; and 6 great great grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her son-in-law, Kenneth "Buck" Maxwell.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Robert T. Hargis and Mary Ada Brown Hargis; her husbands, Floyd Rodgers and John Grizzard; her daughters, Barbara Lee and Joan Maxwell; her son, Donald Rodgers; her sisters, Minnie Chaffin and Gladys Grisham; her brothers, Edd, Robert Charles, and Harold Hargis; her grandson, Jeff Lee; and her special friend, Gene Manus.

A funeral service to honor Mattie Jean Grizzard will be held on Friday, September 27, 2024, at 1 PM at the Baxter Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 PM to 8 PM and again on Friday from 10 AM until service time at the funeral home, followed by interment in Boiling Springs Cemetery. Bros. Harold Walker and Caleb Mackie will officiate this service, celebrating a life devoted to family, faith, and fellowship. Jean will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched.         

Pallbearers will be Caleb Stewart, Zachary Stewart, Perry Stewart, Zane Maxwell, Nathan Lee, Ernie Hargis and honorary pallbearer, Martin Hargis.
