COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Mary Kathleen Schmitt, known fondly as Kathy, passed away peacefully on February 2, 2025, at Signature Health Care of Putnam County in Algood. She was born on March 27, 1930, in Evanston, Illinois, to Jack Guthrie and Marie Wilson Guthrie. Kathy led a life that was both rich in experience and marked by her deep connections with her faith, family, and friends.
Kathy's career as an administrative assistant in the banking sector showcased her dedication and professionalism. After many fulfilling years in Illinois, she moved to Tennessee, where she continued to touch the lives of those around her. Known for her outgoing nature, Kathy was a true people person who didn’t know a stranger. Her warm smile and kindheartedness made her a beloved figure to many.
Kathy was a faithful Catholic. Her faith played a central role in her life. She valued her spiritual community and participated in various church activities that reflected her dedication to her beliefs.
Kathy is survived by her cherished niece, Gloria Culp, and special friends, Gary and Janie Allen. Their memories of her will carry on, celebrating the love and joy she brought to their lives.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Charles "Chuck" Peter Schmitt, her parents, Jack and Marie Guthrie, and her brothers, Gordon, John, and Patrick Guthrie.
A Funeral Service honoring Kathy will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday February 4 at The Chapel at Shepherd's Cove, located at 464 Wilder Highway, Alpine, TN 38543. Visitation for friends and family will be from 1:30 - 2 p.m. Kathy will be laid to rest at Copeland Cemetery in Alpine.
