ALGOOD, TN - Mary R. Graves, a cherished soul, known for her warm smile and positive nature, passed away on August 12, 2024, in Cookeville, TN. Born on January 17, 1940, in Medon, TN, Mary lived a life that reflected her love for Jesus Christ, her family and friends, leaving behind a legacy of love, joy and kindness.
Preceded in death by her parents, Floyd Candon Rhodes and Lola Ervin Rhodes, and her sister, Carolyn Rhodes Bingham, Mary's memory will be forever treasured by her devoted husband of nearly 65 years, Ron Graves. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of her son, Joseph Graves and his wife Vicki of Lenoir City, TN; her daughter, Cynthia Zevallos and her husband Danilo of Atlanta, GA; her beloved grandchildren, Amelia Zevallos de Hamza, Eric Zevallos, and Alan Zevallos; and her adored great-grandchildren, Jacob, Micaela, Amelia, Zyidan, Izzaldin, Alessandra, and Yazmina. Mary also leaves behind special friends, Richard and Marie Bond, Priscilla Fleming and her loving church family at Algood Cumberland Presbyterian Church. She also leaves behind caring and supportive neighbors.
Mary's professional journey was as diverse as it was fulfilling. She brought beauty into the world as a cosmetologist. Later, she served as the administrator at three assisted living facilities, where her compassion and leadership made a lasting impact. In 1998, Mary moved to Cookeville and had been a proud resident of Algood since 2016.
Despite facing various health issues, Mary remained passionate, fiercely independent and active. Her unwavering smile and friendly demeanor were her trademarks. An outgoing person who never met a stranger, Mary was a true people person, effortlessly connecting and relating well with everyone she encountered.
Music was a major part of Mary's life, resonating through her very being. A talented pianist and soprano, she filled the air with melody, performing with various quartets, often alongside her husband. Her musical contributions were a staple in the community, particularly at her beloved Algood Cumberland Presbyterian Church, where she was a devoted member.
Mary will be remembered as the embodiment of friendliness and optimism. Her ability to see the good in every situation and her willingness to lend a hand or a listening ear made her a beacon of light in the lives of those she touched. Her legacy as a Christian is one of love, care, warmth, generosity, and an unshakeable faith in the goodness of people.
Her memory will be cherished, her absence deeply felt, and her influence on her family and friends will continue to be celebrated by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Mary's life was a beautiful melody, a song of love and joy that will echo for generations to come.
A graveside service and interment will be held Friday, August 16th at 3:00 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church Cemetery in Henderson, TN. Rev. Richard Bond will officiate. Her family will receive friends Thursday evening, August 15th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper,Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home.
