COOKEVILLE CHAPEL - Mary Matthews of Baxter, TN passed away on October 17, 2024 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. Born Mary Birrer on October 18, 1943 in Nashville, TN, Mary lived a life marked by hard work and a strong belief in the American Dream. She married her high school sweetheart, John H. Matthews, Jr., on June 23, 1961. Together, they pursued and obtained multiple college degrees and established John Matthews & Assoc., an engineering firm where Mary served as the business manager for fifty years. In addition, they raised their daughter Lynn, had many years of boating adventures on lakes and off the southeast coast of the U.S., and privately supported causes near to their hearts.

Mary leaves behind her beloved husband of 63 years, John H. Matthews Jr. who resides in Baxter, TN; her daughter Lynn Fountain and son-in-law David Fountain who reside in Huntsville, AL.; her granddaughter Hannah Rose Fountain of Tulsa, OK; her sister-in-law, Sharon Travis, of Glasgow, KY; and others. Mary will be fiercely missed by family and friends.

A private family memorial will be held on October 19, 2024. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to:

1. The Whitson-Hester School of Nursing at Tennessee Tech, PO Box 1915, Cookeville, TN 38505; 

2. The CRMC Foundation, 1 Medical Center Blvd, Cookeville, TN 38501;

4. The Cookeville-Putnam County Animal Shelter, 2650 Gainesboro Grade, Cookeville, TN 38501.
