Mary Elizabeth Bryant

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth Bryant, age 87, of Cookeville, will be at 1 p.m. Monday February 3, 2020 in the Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. Joe Roberts will officiate. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Her family will receive friends on Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Monday from 12 p.m. until service time. Mrs. Bryant passed away Wednesday January 29, 2020 at her home. She was born Sunday April 10, 1932 in Hart County, KY to the late David Estell Upton, M.D., and Susie Marie Cave Upton. She lived most of her adult life in Cookeville and was the beloved mother of four children. She participated in her childrens' activities, serving as a room mother, Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. Mrs. Bryant was a member of Collegeside Church of Christ for over 60 years. After her retirement from 20 years with the Social Security Administration, she volunteered in the church's food pantry and enjoyed her women's Sunday School class. Her social activities included spending time with friends, playing bridge, and sharing meals with her "lunch bunch." Her family says, "She loved people, and people loved her. Mom always knew how to make each person feel valued and accepted." Mrs. Bryant was an alumna of Tennessee Tech, where she received Bachelors' and Masters' degrees in elementary education. She is survived by three daughters, Susan Bryant Bullington; Mary Beth (Mark) Novak; Lou Alice (David) Funk; grandchildren, Benjamin (Robin) Bryant, Elizabeth Bryant, Timothy Bryant, Sarah Fahim; John Bullington, Rex (Alysson) Bullington; Libby Novak, Chris Novak; David Funk, Mary Catherine Funk; and great grandchild, Alexis (Isaiah) Hendon. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David Edwin Bryant; and two brothers, David Robert and Kenneth Earl Upton.
