Marshall "Joe" Cowen

Funeral services for Mr. William Marshall "JOE" Cowen, age 89, will be held Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Dyer Funeral Home. Bro. Steve Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in West Cemetery in the Burgess Falls Community. His family will receive friends Monday 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and again Tuesday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Due to Covid-19 precautions, social distancing measures will be in place. Mr. Cowen passed away Sunday October 4, 2020 at his home with his family by his side. Born January 1, 1931 in Smith County to the late Wade Eugene and Eliza Jane Washer Cowen. He was a resident of the Burgess School Community. He worked building furniture, working into his seventies before retiring from Eagle's Furniture. Joe then made his hobby of gardening into a full time production, becoming a fixture at the Farmers Market, mostly enjoying the company and conversation of other vendors, customers, and newly made friends. Joe never met a stranger. Joe was a member of Scott Avenue Baptist Church for over 40 years. The church was his second family whom he adored and was always ready to socialize and be in his church family's presence up until his illness in 2020. Through his illness, he kept his faith and was prepared to go to his heavenly home. Joe is survived by the love of his life, whom he married on December 11, 1965, almost 55 years ago, his wife Effie Mae Farley Cowen; a son, Bobby Joe Cowen; daughter, Belinda Jane Cowen; four grandchildren, Blake Garrison, Justin and Jacob Cowen and Mallorie Garrison; great grandchild, William J. Cowen; and a host of nieces, nephews and in laws. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by son, William Jeffery Cowen; brothers, Gene, Pete and George Cowen and by sisters, Janice (Doodle Bug) Bryant, Billie (Herbert) Judd and Geraldene (Daniel) McBride. Pallbearers will be will be his grandsons and friends. Joe's family would like to thank Avalon Hospice for their sincere care and attention during the last few months and to Bro. Steve Brown of Scott Avenue and all friends and family whom have kept them in their thoughts and prayers. You are sincerely appreciated. Dyer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. (931)526-7158.
