Margaret Ann Smith departed this life to her heavenly home of comfort and love where she longed to be on March 11, 2024, at the age of 85. Born on August 27,1938, in Cumberland County, TN, Margaret's vibrant spirit and unwavering faith left an indelible mark on all who knew her. She passed away surrounded by family at NHC of Cookeville, TN, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and strength.


Margaret, affectionately known by her friends and family, was the daughter of the late Alton Powell Witt Sr. and Lenora Ruby Elmore Witt. She was the wife of the late Dr. James Lee Smith, who absolutely adored her. Margaret was a devoted mother to her sons, the late James Michael Smith and the late Christopher Lee Smith. She is survived by one brother, Al Witt, Jr. and his wife Sandra of Marietta, GA. She adored her grandchildren, Amanda Adkins and husband Wade, Jared Smith and wife Alexis, William Smith and wife Shea, all of Cookeville, and her treasured great-grandchildren, Hudson and Hadlee Adkins, & Michael and Kaylee Smith. She was also a dear aunt to her nieces and nephews, Ginny and Bryan Henson, Lisa Mabrey, Cindy and Raoul Russell, Jonathan and Melissa Witt. Margaret was preceded in death by her sisters, Grace Penner and Kathy Adams.


Margaret had a keen sense of business and dedication to her family's endeavors. Margaret's involvement in her community extended to her longstanding membership at the Cookeville First Baptist Church where her faith flourished and guided her through life's journey.


An adventurous soul, Margaret's zest for life was evident in her love for travel. She shared many memorable trips with her dear friend, Peggy Fragopoulos, exploring the wonders of the world. Margaret's passion for barefoot water skiing was unmatched; she was crowned the National Barefoot Skiing Champion in 1997 and continued to embrace the sport, even barefoot skiing on the Sea of Galilee at the impressive age of 80.


Known for her high energy and impeccable style, Margaret was the epitome of class, always dressed beautifully and carrying herself with grace. Her generosity knew no bounds, and she was always ready to lend a helping hand to those in need. Margaret was a strong woman of faith, whose loving and kind nature resonated with everyone she met.


The family will receive friends and loved ones for visitation on Wednesday, March 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. A celebration of Margaret's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 14, at the same location, with Pastor Bobby Davis officiating. Following the service, Margaret will be laid to rest at Crest Lawn Cemetery.


Serving as pallbearers are Sheriff Eddie Farris, Dr. Jim Vaden, Bryan Henson, Jared Smith, William Smith, and Don Johnson. Honorary pallbearers are Johnny Nash, Dr. Steve Copeland, John Josephson, Jackie Borden, Bobby Davis, Jackie Farris, Sam Sandlin and Andy Redus.

Margaret Ann Smith's life was a testament to the power of love, kindness, and generosity. Her unwavering spirit and the memories she created will continue to inspire and comfort her family and friends for generations to come.
