Funeral services celebrating the life of James Lowell Smith, 71 of Cookeville will be held at 2 pm on Monday, June 27th, at Cookeville First Baptist Church. Interment, with Military Honors, will follow in the Cookeville City Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday from 10 am until the time of the service time at Cookeville First Baptist Church. Mr. Smith died Saturday evening, June 25, 2011 at his home in loving care of his wife and family. Lowell was born December 1, 1939 in Cookeville to the late Lillard and Etta Maxwell Smith. After graduating from Cookeville Central High School in 1957, Lowell attended Castle Heights Military Academy. He then entered Tennessee Tech University in the fall of 1958 and was a four-year letterman of the Tennessee Tech football team. Lowell was a member of the all OVC decade team of the 60"�s, received the Robert Hill Johnson Award, and was later inducted into the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame. Upon graduation from Tennessee Tech in 1962, Lowell served as 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army while stationed in Korea. After being discharged from the Army, Lowell moved to Burlington, North Carolina and was employed at Burlington Industries as a Personnel Director. Lowell returned to Cookeville three years later to work as an insurance agent with John Hancock Insurance Agency. He then served as a sales representative for Adams Plastics. In 1978, Lowell purchased Putnam Farm and Home Equipment and operated the dealership until retirement. Lowell was active and held various offices in several community organizations including the Cookeville Jaycees, the Putnam County Library Board, and the Lions Club, in which he received The Melvin Jones Award. Also, Lowell was awarded the Louis Johnson Outstanding Alumnus Award from the Tennessee Tech Business Department, and served two terms on the Cookeville City Council. Lowell was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cookeville where he served as a deacon. His family included his wife of fifty years, Brenda Fox Smith (whom he married December 1, 1961 in Cookeville), a son and daughter- in- law, James Lowell Smith, Jr (Jim) and Julie Smith of Cookeville, a daughter and son- in- law, Shannon and Greg Hunter of Cookeville, and six grandchildren; Matt, Trey, Chase, and Samantha Hunter and Cade and Ella Smith. Active Pallbearers will include Randy Hardison, Jim Hicks, Lee Hicks, Jake Libbey, Dean Moore, Ken Peterson, Rudolph Schmittou, Flavious Smith, Ray Thomas, and Don Welch. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the 1958- 1961 Tennessee Tech Golden Eagle football team. Memorial donations may be made to the Lowell and Brenda Smith Scholarship Foundation at Tennessee Tech University, P.O. Box 1915, Cookeville, TN 38505. Dr. Randall Adkisson and Rev.
