Leonard Dow Maddux

DYER CHAPEL-Leonard Dow Maddux, born on May 8, 1925, on a farm in Putnam County, TN, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 18, 2024, at NHC of Cookeville. He was a beloved member of his community and cherished by all who knew him.

A graduate of Baxter Seminary, Leonard demonstrated an unwavering commitment to his faith and his family. He served honorably in the US Navy from 1944 to 1952, bravely fighting in World War II and the Korean Conflict. This service instilled in him a profound sense of duty and patriotism that he carried throughout his life.

Leonard enjoyed a fulfilling career as a dedicated employee of Kingston Timer in Smithville, TN, from where he retired. Known for his strong work ethic, he was respected by colleagues and friends alike.

He attended Cookeville Free Will Baptist Church.

Leonard had a deep love for God, his family, and the rural traditions that defined his life. He found joy in spending quality time with his beloved family and friends, fostering relationships that enriched his years.

Leonard was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jewel Christine Bowman Maddux, who passed away on April 5, 2010, as well as his parents, Lewis Dow and Margaret Arizona Allison Maddux; his siblings, sisters Christine Quinn and Elsie Peterson, and brothers Ralph, Lawrence, Clifford, and Eugene Maddux.

His legacy lives on through his surviving family members: his sons, Larry (Pam) Maddux of Cookeville and Richard (Gale) Maddux of Franklin, TN; as well as his grandchildren, Kelly (Blake) Bourland of Memphis, Benjamin (Shelly) Maddux of Knoxville, and Rachel (Rob) Boulden of Brentwood. He was also a proud great-grandfather to four, including Elizabeth Bourland and Knox Bourland of Memphis, and Casen Maddux and Layla Maddux of Knoxville. Leonard is remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews, who continue to carry on the values he instilled in them.

The family would like to express gratitude to Leonard's special caregivers, Cathy Hensley, Ruby Murphy, and Janet Guffey, who provided loving care during his last five years.
