Funeral services for Mr. Julian Burton Dowell, 95 of Cookeville will be held Saturday October 8 at 1 p.m. in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery. Rev. Max Mayo will officiate. Mr. Dowell died Thursday afternoon October 6, 2011 in Masters Health Care Center. He was born August 30, 1916 in Granville, Tennessee to the late Thurman T. and Mable Claire Hargis Dowell. Mr. Dowell attended Granville Elementary School; graduated for Baxter Seminary; and attended Tennessee Polytechnic Institute majoring in Engineering. He met the former Marie Phillips in 1940 and they married in 1943 in Las Vegas. Mr. Dowell began his working career as a payroll clerk at Cookeville Shirt Company where he made 37 cents per hour. He also worked at Cookeville Planning Mill and was service manager at Carlen Motor Company. He was a tool designer for Lockheed in Marietta, GA, was a production planner for the former Bowser/Briggs Corporation. He was best known in the Cookeville Area for his real estate investments for over 60 years. In 1968 he became a license pilot and continued to fly until he was 80 years old. He was a member and worked full-time for the National Guard until his retirement. He was a lifelong Methodist. He was a member of Cookeville First Methodist Church and a former member of Granville United Methodist Church. He and his wife traveled extensively seeing 48 of 50 states. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie Phillips Dowell; and a brother, Bobby Dowell Survivors include his two daughters and sons-in-law, Julia & Jim Woodford of Cookeville; and Linda & Harold Dunsmore of Lexington, KY; and two grandchildren, Jay Woodford of Dallas, TX and Jenna (Tyler) Hillis of McMinnville, TN. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Mr. Dowell family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
