Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Greer Boyd, 88 of Cookeville, will be held Saturday June 21 at 11:00 a.m. at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Rev. Pat Handlson will officiate. Interment will follow in Cookeville City Cemetery in the Boyd Family Section. Mrs. Boyd's family will receive friends Friday, June 20 from 5 to 8:00 p.m., and again Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home. Mrs. Boyd died Sunday evening June 15, 2014 at her home. She was the daughter of the late Claude and Vera Greer of Union City, TN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Whitten Boyd, a local pharmacist and owner of Boyd Drug Store. Mrs. Boyd was born in Lincoln County, TN and lived her early years there in the town of Petersburg. She later resided in Union City, TN. She attended Peace College in North Carolina and graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a degree in Library Science. She also received a Masters Degree in Library Science from George Peabody College. She began her professional career as a Librarian in Reelfoot Regional Library from 1952 until 1956. She then moved to Cookeville were she retired after 40 years of service as Director of Upper Cumberland Regional Library. Mrs. Boyd was a member of the American Library Association and a member and Past-President of the South Eastern Library Association; and a member of Tennessee Library Association. She was a member and past-president of Algood Home Demonstration Club; Cookeville Study Club and American Association of University Women. She also was an active supporter of Tennessee Tech, the Mended Hearts Program at C.R.M.C., the Cookeville History Museum, and First Presbyterian Church where she was a member. She was an honorary member of Cookeville Breakfast Club where she was a Paul Harris Fellow. She is survived by numerous cousins and nephews Ernest Boyd Evans of Cookeville and Walter L. Evans III of Gaithersburg, Maryland. Honorary Pallbearers will be Elders at Cookeville Presbyterian Church. Active Pallbearers will be family and friends.
