John Wall

August 23, 1931 — December 17, 2022

Funeral services for John Douglas Wall Sr., age 91 of Algood, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, December 30 at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Dr. Kevin Conrad will officiate. Interment with military honors will follow at Algood City Cemetery. His family will receive friends Friday from 11 a.m. until service time.

John passed away Saturday December 17, 2022, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center. He was born August 23, 1931, in Cookeville to the late Wilkes Hammock Wall and Neta Williams Wall. John graduated from Tennessee Tech University in 1953 with a degree in Business Management. While at Tech, he excelled on the track team, setting OVC and school records and leading the team to its most successful three-year stretch, which included an undefeated season and OVC titles. In 2000, he was inducted into the TTU Sports Hall of Fame. John continued competing in track competitions after retirement in the 100, 200, and 400-meter events, winning Senior Olympic state and national titles and stopping just a few years ago. He was a veteran of the US Army and was commissioned a second lieutenant through the TTU ROTC program. John retired from the federal government after working for five different agencies over a 28-year career in Oak Ridge and Washington DC. He also worked in real estate in the suburban Virginia area and the Upper Cumberland. He attended the Cookeville First United Methodist Church and was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and former member of the Algood Lions Club. John had a lifelong love of singing and was particularly fond of 1930’s and 1940’s era music. He is survived by his long-time dear friend, Dora Yates of Algood, TN; daughter, Jennifer Wall Proctor (husband, Steve) of Cordova, TN; son, CAPT John “Jack” Wall Jr., CEC, USN of Virginia Beach, VA; sister, Lula Wall Bartholomew of Oak Ridge, TN; grandchildren, Katherine Proctor and Nicholas Proctor; and nine beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anita Wall Moore; and brothers, Wilkes Hammock Wall Jr. and James Thomas Wall. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Cookeville/Putnam County Animal Shelter, 2650 Gainesboro Grade, Cookeville, TN 38501.
