John Maddox

John Zell Maddox passed away peacefully on October 1, 2023 surrounded by family. John was born February 19, 1944 in Putnam County, TN. He was predeceased by his father Cecil Maddox and mother Susie Davis Maddox and siblings Art, Josephine, Maxine Loftis (Ralph), Hazeltine Weaver. He is survived by siblings Ken Maddox, Earnestine Poole, Don Maddox, and Jim Maddox. He leaves behind his loving wife Sarah (Sally) and five children: John Scott Maddox, Kelly Maddox (Theresa), Jeff Maddox, John Opfer (Nancy) and Frances Opfer Cronlund (Matthew). He also leaves devoted grandchildren Katrin Cronlund and Henry Cronlund. He may be missed also by his two cocker spaniels, Redman and Oliver Twist.

John worked in various professions after serving in the armed forces and graduating from Tennessee Tech, where he majored in agriculture. He also worked for the State of Tennessee as Medicaid interviewer, Cumberland County DHS Director, and Director of Vocational Rehabilitation in Murfreesboro.

He loved music and played guitar and violin. His musical interests were varied from participating in the Old Gospel Quartet in North Carolina to being a devoted fan of Johnny Cash and classical music. He volunteered for a cocker spaniel rescue, was on the board of Good Samaritans, Exchange Club, and other clubs and organization. He was an avid reader and found few subjects that did not engage him. He was a gentleman and a scholar.

His greatest joy was his family. He was immensely proud of them and spent as much time with them as possible. All his children and grandchildren have funny and loving memories of him.

Graveside services with military honors will be at 12 noon Saturday October 7 at Smith Chapel Cemetery. His family will receive friend at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home on Saturday from 10 a.m.. until 11:30 a.m.
