Mr. Jimmie "Jim" Ellis York, 75 of Cookeville, passed away Sunday, September 29, 2019 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Jim's family will receive friends Wednesday, October 2nd from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. A private graveside service and interment with military honors will be held Thursday, October 3rd at Algood City Cemetery. He was born November 26, 1943 in New Castle, Indiana to the late Wilber and Chlora Turner York. His family moved to Jamestown where he graduated from York Institute. He enlisted in the US Army, serving as a sergeant in Korea during the Vietnam War. He was a graduate University of Tennessee Agriculture Science Department and remained a supporter of the department throughout his life. Jim owned a coal company and was a member of the Co-Op board while living in Jamestown. He and his family moved to Cookeville in 1988 where he continued to farm and raise cattle on the family farm. His contributions to the farming and agriculture community are numerous as he was a member of the Upper Cumberland and Putnam Co. Cattleman's Association, American Angus Association and Putnam County Farm Bureau board, among others. Jim was a family man, and will be remembered for his hardworking, outgoing and loving nature. Oftentimes, he would stop what he was doing to help others in need. He is survived by his adoring family, his wife of 46 years, Shirley Benson York; daughter and son in law, Angie and Jeremy Glascock; son and daughter-in-law, Andy and Katie York; grandchildren, Riley and Ryan Glascock and Walker and Anden York; brother, Bob (Deb) York of Shelbyville; sisters, Linda York Fowler (Alex) Lynch of Jamestown and Norma Ruth (Ray) Whiteheart of Winston Salem, NC; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions may be made to Putnam County 4-H, (Jim York Memorial), 900 S Walnut Ave, Suite 4, Cookeville, TN 38501.
