Jim Sutherland

James Everett Sutherland, known affectionately as Jim, passed away suddenly on January 30, 2024, in Cookeville, TN. Born on February 4, 1946, in Tazewell, Virginia, Jim's journey through life was marked by his loving nature, gentle spirit, and the smile and humor he brought into every room.

Jim was preceded in death by his father (Everett Hall Sutherland), mother (Alverta Stevenson Beavers), and stepfather (George I. Beavers). His legacy of love and laughter lives on through his devoted wife of 20 years, Becky Marlow Sutherland; his daughters, Anita Jo (Don) Gotthardt, and Melissa Sutherland. Brother, Raymond (Patsy) Sutherland. Numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will miss his playful jokes and warm hugs. Lastly his beloved dogs, Angel and Joy, who were his constant, faithful companions.

A graduate of Tazewell High School in Virginia, Jim's commitment to service was evident early in his life as he served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Following his military service, he embarked on a fulfilling career with Averitt in Cookeville, where he began as a truck driver and later served as a dispatcher, dedicating over 30 years to the company.

Jim's contributions to his community were numerous. He was a member of Poplar Grove Baptist Church, where he found spiritual fulfillment and camaraderie. His selflessness shone through in the way he cared for others, especially his neighbors, often tending to their properties with the same love and attention he gave to his own.

His interests and hobbies were as varied as they were passionate. An avid golfer, Jim enjoyed working as a course marshall at the Golden Eagle Golf Club, where his jovial personality and great sense of humor were as much a part of the club's atmosphere as the fairways and greens themselves.

A fervent fan of the UNC Tar Heels, especially their basketball team, Jim's spirit and excitement were infectious during the season. His love for sports also led him to the Tennessee National Walking Horse Celebration in Shelbyville, TN, an event he looked forward to attending each year.

Those who knew Jim would describe him as loving, gentle, and funny. He greeted everyone with a smile that could light up a room and had a knack for spreading happiness wherever he went. His presence was a gift to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. As the seasons change and the grass continues to grow, we are reminded of Jim's dedication to nurturing not just the land, but the lives of those he loved. Rest in peace, dear Jim, until we meet again.

A memorial visitation will be held Saturday, February 3rd from 3pm until 5pm, with a brief celebration of life service to follow at 5pm, at the Cookeville chapel of Hooper-Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home. Dr. Jason Groe will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, Jim's family suggests memorial contributions be made to Cookeville Regional Medical Center Charitable Foundation, 127 N Oak Ave, Cookeville, TN 38501 and/or to Poplar Grove Baptist Church, 4365 Rocky Point Rd, Cookeville, TN 38506.
