James Richard Rose Sr., known affectionately as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away suddenly on June 25, 2024, at his residence in Cookeville, TN. Born on March 14, 1942, in Memphis, TN, Jim's journey through life was marked by dedication, kindness, and an unwavering love for his family.
Jim's early years were spent in Oak Ridge, TN, where he was raised by his late parents, James Wilbur Rose and Grace Owen Hay Rose. His formative years were filled with the warmth of family and the pursuit of knowledge, a pursuit that would become a lifelong passion. Jim's academic journey led him to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, where he earned both a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering and a Master's degree in Nuclear Engineering.
Jim's professional life was a testament to his love of education and his commitment to nurturing the minds of future generations. For over four decades, he was a pillar of the Tennessee Tech University community, where he began teaching basic engineering and later ascended to the role of Vice President of Admissions. His influence on the lives of countless students is a legacy that will endure for years to come.
Beyond his professional achievements, Jim was deeply involved in various associations that reflected his diverse interests. He was a proud member of the Cookeville Noonday Rotary, the Order of the Engineer, and a faithful member of the Cookeville First United Methodist Church. His engagement in these organizations was not merely a pastime but a meaningful extension of his service to the community.
Those who knew Jim would describe him as a kind and intelligent man, with a quiet demeanor that belied a steadfast and, at times, stubborn nature. This gentle stubbornness was always in the service of causes and people he believed in, never wavering in his convictions or his support for his loved ones.
Family was the cornerstone of Jim's world. He leaves behind his beloved wife of over 50 years, Beth Rose, a partnership that stood as a testament to love and commitment. His legacy is carried on through his son, James Rose Jr. (Lisa Hoskins), his daughter, Caroline Peacock (John), and his cherished grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth and Ella Grace, who brought immeasurable joy to his life.
Jim's love for his grandchildren was evident in every smile and every moment spent in their presence. He was a source of wisdom, comfort, and endless support, embodying the role of a grandfather with grace and devotion.
The family will gather to honor and celebrate Jim's life at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. on Friday, July 5, with a visitation one hour prior.
Jim's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his spirit will continue to inspire and guide us. His was a life well-lived, full of purpose, love, and the quiet strength that characterized his every action.
