Jim Andrews

James (Jim) Addison Andrews Jr. passed from this world to his heavenly home on September 15, 2019, where he joined his mother Esther Ruth Jones Andrews and father James Sr. All who knew Jim recognized a man of great honor, vision, commitment, and love. A native of Durham, NC, Jim graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1959 and then joined the United States Army, which stationed him at Fort Sill, OK. There fate and a fellow soldier brought Jim and his beloved Rosalie together. Never has a man loved his wife more: Theirs was a sixty-year love affair. Married life began in Augsburg, Germany, where Jim was stationed for two years before transitioning to civilian life and a thirty-year career with General Telephone. After short stints in temporary homes around the South (including a year stay in Cookeville), Jim and Rosalie, with their three children, returned to their adopted home of Cookeville in 1976 and swore they'd never leave. In addition to his professional life with General Telephone, Jim worked exhaustively in service of others. His mantra was to leave every place better than he found it, and through his work with Rotary International, the United Way, and the YMCA, he was able to do just that. Jim played a pivotal role in bringing the YMCA to Putnam County in the 1980s and served several roles with Rotary. In addition to service as Club President, District Governor, and Group Study Exchange Team Leader to India, he was instrumental in getting District 6780 and the Cookeville Breakfast Rotary Club involved with Rotary Youth Exchange. During his year as Governor, his District hosted twenty exchange students. As a result of his Group Study Exchange in India, Jim became involved with Rotary's Polio Plus and was recognized by District 3300 of southern India in 1999 for his part in providing surgeries and support apparatus to over 300 children crippled by polio. Twice Jim was named International Training Leader, and he was Zone Coordinator for the Poverty and Hunger Alleviation Task Force. Jim also founded and administered the Rotary International Traveling and Hosting Fellowship from 1990 until his retirement in 2011. Although Jim was utterly devoted to any task he accepted in his work and service life, nothing surpassed his undying love and commitment to his family. The roles of husband to his beloved Rosalie, "Daaad" to his three children, and "head of the herd" were his favorites, and he said his "crowning achievements are nine beautiful grandchildren." One of his favorite sayings, which he attributed to Warren Buffet, was, "Success, true wealth, is when you reach the end of your life and realize that the people you love love you back." If that is true, and we believe it is, then our Jim - our Daaad - our Granddaddy is the most successful, most wealthy man who has ever lived. Jim is survived by his adoring wife Rosalie; daughters Joye, Jitka, and Alicia; sons John and James III; and nine grandchildren: Jacob, Joshua, Joseph, Elizabeth, Adam, James, Benji, Karolina, and Emily. We will love him forever. Also surviving Jim are his sister, Joanna Andrews Russell, of Durham, NC; his "blood brother," Winston Jones of Midlothian, VA; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
